It works from incomplete information, letting you get started now and and gradually tighten things up. You don't have to spend a lot of time up front defining items (though you can import from Excel or a database). In the beginning, you can define Items on the fly as you receive or issue stock. And you can issue stock without existing lots -- the lots can be created automatically.

After the system has been running a while, you can tighten up control, making sure that only authorized supervisors can override the rules (with a full audit trail). When you get some time, you can go through the warehouse, creating lots for your existing stock section by section.

Once you have accurate data in the system, you get a clear, up-to-date picture of what is going on. You don't have to wait till the end of the month for inaccurate reports. Everybody is working from the same information. Management and accounting can see information from the operational systems, including consolidated information across multiple sites. And you can start to implement best-practice processes for inventory management like ABC analysis.
